BI Engineer Job Description

For a client we are seeking an experienced BI Engineer to expand the existing Data & Middleware team. This exciting project involves transforming a series of legacy applications into a modern, scalable BI architecture based on Microsoft Fabric and Power BI. Preference is given to payroll employees or permanent freelancers.

Key Technologies and Patterns:

• Core BI Platform: Microsoft Fabric (central platform), Power BI (reporting & visualization), Tableau (to be migrated to Power BI)
• Data Modelling & Query: DAX (Power BI calculation engine), SQL (data querying), Dimensional modelling (SCD, fact modelling)
• Data Storage & Architecture: Data Lakes / Lakehouses, DirectQuery, Import and Direct Lake modes

Absolute Must-Haves:

Power BI, Microsoft Fabric, and DAX

Requirements:

• Proficiency with Power BI and Fabric in terms of platform capabilities, internals, performance, and advanced concepts.
• Experience in building robust and performant semantic models adhering to best practices, proficiency in DAX, understanding direct query, import and direct lake modes and their implications.
• Passion for data visualization, experience in effective, intuitive visual dashboards and storytelling visuals design to clearly communicate insights. Applying best practices in report design and visualization.
• Good data modelling skills: Ability to model and organize data using dimensional modelling constructs (slowly changing dimensions, fact modelling, etc.).
• Good SQL and database skills: knowledge of SQL and experience in managing and querying data lakes or lakehouses using SQL.
• Effective and persuasive communication abilities, with the capacity to articulate complex technical concepts to a variety of stakeholders.
• A proactive approach to identifying issues and implementing innovative technological solutions.
• A strong drive to enhance existing technology solutions and processes continually.

Scope of Work:

• High Quality BI Engineering: Design and implement BI systems and tools. Create semantic models, dashboards, visualizations, and reports for teams and leadership. Train and support data engineers and business users on BI tools and data usage.
• BI Platform Optimization: Optimize queries, database performance, and overall BI systems. Maintain, update, and enhance existing dashboards and reports. Document data pipelines, architecture, and transformations.
• Governance and Data Quality: Ensure high data quality, accuracy, and integrity. Implement data governance policies adhering to security standards. Troubleshoot data quality or load issues.
• Time Management: Collaborate closely with the engineering manager to organize, prioritize tasks and projects to meet deadlines, align with business goals, and manage the technical backlog.
• Project Life Cycle: Be actively involved in all stages of the project lifecycle, including planning, development, delivery, and running of BI solutions.
• Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with analysts, developers, IS, and business teams to understand requirements. Collaborate with non-technical stakeholders to understand business needs and translate them into BI solutions. Support decision making by delivering clear, relevant insights.
• Security Assurance: Maintain a strong focus on securing customer data, adhering to best practices in data privacy and protection.
