Proxmox Consultant for VMware/Hyper-V to Proxmox Migration

About the Role:

The role involves working with the Security Unit to consolidate and migrate production and non-production workloads from VMware vSphere/ESXi and Microsoft Hyper-V to Proxmox VE. We are looking for a hands-on Proxmox consultant with prior experience in similar migrations. The consultant will assess the existing environment, design the target Proxmox architecture, plan and execute the migration with minimal downtime, and provide comprehensive documentation and training for the internal team.

Key Responsibilities:

• Assess current VMware and Hyper-V environments, including inventory, dependencies, storage, networking, and licensing.
• Design the target Proxmox VE architecture, including cluster topology, storage backend, networking, high availability, and backup strategy.
• Plan and execute VM migrations using appropriate methods and tools, with rollback plans.
• Configure Proxmox clusters, Proxmox Backup Server, HA groups, and monitoring/alerting systems.
• Validate and tune migrated workloads for production.
• Document migration runbooks, cut-over plans, and operational procedures.
• Decommission source infrastructure and manage hardware repurposing.
• Manage certificates and PKI material for Proxmox web UI, API, and cluster communication.
• Provide knowledge transfer and training to internal staff.
• Report progress against milestones and identify risks early.

Required Qualifications and Experience:

• Demonstrable experience in delivering at least one production migration from VMware and/or Hyper-V to Proxmox VE.
• Solid Proxmox VE and Linux administration background.
• Hands-on experience with Ceph or ZFS in production.
• Proficiency with VM conversion tooling and live/cold cut-over techniques.

Desired Skills and Certifications:

• Proxmox certification or equivalent experience.
• Experience with VMware licensing landscape and cost-reduction migrations.
• Ansible / Terraform / Infrastructure-as-Code experience.
• Experience with Proxmox SDN, clustering at scale, or multi-site/DR designs.
• Familiarity with monitoring stacks (Prometheus / Grafana / Zabbix).

IT-Related Skills:

• Proxmox VE expertise in cluster setup, management, upgrades, and day-2 operations.
• VMware migration experience, including VM export/conversion to KVM/QEMU.
• Hyper-V migration experience, including VHD/VHDX handling and conversion.
• KVM/QEMU virtualization, Linux system administration, and storage management.
• Network and security operations, including handling crypto material and PKI certificates.
• Backup and DR strategies, automation and tooling, and IT service management awareness.
