Technical Documentation Consultant (.NET / SQL / Application Analysis)

About the Role

We are looking for a Technical Documentation Consultant to join a project focused on documenting a business-critical enterprise software platform built on Microsoft technologies. The platform is a long-standing application that plays a key role in business operations.

You will be responsible for analyzing the existing application, understanding its architecture and technical implementation, and producing high-quality technical documentation that supports future maintenance, knowledge transfer, onboarding, and application lifecycle management.

You will work closely with developers, solution architects, subject matter experts, and business stakeholders, acting as the bridge between the technical implementation and clear, structured documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze the existing software platform and gain a thorough understanding of its architecture and functional components.
  • Review existing source code (.NET / VB.NET) to understand application behavior where necessary.
  • Map interactions between internal components and third-party integrations.
  • Produce clear, structured, and comprehensive technical documentation.
  • Document system architecture, business processes, interfaces, data flows, and application modules.
  • Create implementation, configuration, operational, and maintenance documentation.
  • Develop knowledge transfer documentation to support future maintenance and onboarding.
  • Validate documentation with developers, architects, and business experts.
  • Identify opportunities to improve documentation quality and overall system understanding.
  • Present findings and recommendations to the project team.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong knowledge of VB.NET / .NET Framework.
  • Experience with Microsoft Visual Studio.
  • Good knowledge of Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
  • Familiarity with Git version control.
  • Experience working with legacy Microsoft applications and software architecture.
  • Proven experience documenting complex enterprise applications.
  • Ability to understand existing source code and translate technical concepts into clear, structured documentation.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and technical writing skills.

Nice to Have

  • Experience with AI-assisted documentation tools (e.g. GitHub Copilot).
  • Experience within the pension, insurance, or financial services sector.
  • Experience with application lifecycle management and knowledge transfer initiatives.
